Traditionally roasted on grills (known as “sardiñeras”) on the streets and in homes, sardines represent the simplicity and richness of Basque cuisine.

“Sardine Day” is a festival that celebrates this culinary tradition and the fishing history of Santurtzi.

During this day, which has become a local and tourist attraction, the streets are filled with music, dancing and, most importantly, the aroma of sardines roasting in the open air.

Typical activities during this day include the preparation and tasting of sardines, barbecue competitions, exhibitions related to maritime life and fishing, and cultural events highlighting Santurtzi’s heritage.

Don’t forget to include this plan in your route for 16 July.
